Where to find honest credit repair professionals

For honest help with your credit score go to Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

Your local Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) can provide advice about how to build a good credit record or how to start your credit repair.

The CCCS may also be able to make payment plans with your creditors if you’ve fallen behind. These services are offered for free or at a very low cost. To find the nearest CCCS office, call toll-free, 800-388-2227, or go to www.nfcc.org.

Use the National Locator Line or Zip Code Locator to find your closest NFCC member agency. Homeowners who want to avoid foreclosure or are concerned about their ability to make their mortgage payments can receive immediate assistance.

When you find a good company make sure you get in writing everything the company says it is going to do for you, and what guarantee they offer, if any.

What can the credit repair professionals
do for you?

The best way to settle collections is let NFCC contact the collection agency and explains that you are willing to pay off the collection account under the condition that all reporting is withdrawn from credit bureaus. NFCC will request a letter from the collector that explicitly states its agreement to delete the account upon receipt/clearance of your payment.

Although not all collection agencies will delete reporting, removing all references to a collection account completely will increase your score and is certainly worth the effort involved.

The only way to bring a “past due” collection account current is to pay it in full or settle it for less than the full balance and bring it to a zero balance.

How to pay off debt for best results when the money are tight

The main steps for credit repair are to pay off your bills in this order.

  1. Pay first the "past due' balances that are not in collection status;

  2. pay collection agencies that agree to remove all references of your accounts to credit bureaus;

  3. pay off your credit cards that are open and revolving;

  4. pay or settle the remaining collections or "past due" that are unpaid but the creditor refuses to delete with payment. It still makes sense to settle or pay these because a possibility of a more negative reporting.
