Increase credit score with help from Credit Service Companies. Is it a good idea?

To increase credit score with a professional is an appealing idea. There are reputable companies out there that can help you repair your credit, but you have to be careful because many are not in business to help. In credit repair business is difficult to promise a certain result, so anyone who guarantees results is lying.

Credit Service Companies nationwide appeal to consumers with poor credit histories. They promise, for a fee, to clean up your credit report so you can get a car loan, a home mortgage, insurance, or even a job.

The truth is, they can’t deliver. After you pay them hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees, these companies do little or close to nothing to improve your credit report; most simply vanish with your money.

What is "file segregation"

Fraudulent companies sometimes offer to provide consumers with different tax identification or social security numbers in order to create a new credit file. This practice, called “file segregation,” is illegal. You do not want more trouble in top of what you already have.

I would rather go for help from a local counseling center.

The Federal Trade Commission contact info

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them.

To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit www.ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261.

The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft, and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.
